LA COMÈTE
An exhibition by Myriam Van Imschoot & Federico Protto
At Ygrec-ENSAPC Art Center
From 12 to 15 of July, 2023
Opening on the 12th of July, 5 pm
La Comète is a project created by artists Myriam Van Imschoot and Federico Protto for and with children aged 7 to 11 from Aubervilliers. Focusing on the intricacies of listening, it takes the form of sound explorations that link the spaces of the art centre to other biotopes.
For this project, the two artists are working with pupils from the Charlotte Delbo primary schools in Aubervilliers and with children from the Maison de l’enfance Tony Lainé (located in the Villette- Quatre chemins district). The artists and the children are developing tools that facilitate ‘ear-expansion’ far beyond what our ears tend to hear, with recording devices, drawings, guessing games and scores, etc. How do we navigate differently through our familiar and not so familiar environments when sound becomes the compass?
A pop-up exhibition featuring recordings and other productions made during the workshops and in situ will open on Wednesday 12 July and close on 15 July.
The project will then travel to other organisations and institutions in the form of a listening station produced in collaboration with ENSAPC graduate Hortense Raynaud, and accompanied by a small catalogue also designed with ENSAPC student Nadezhda Ermakova.
La Comète by Myriam Van Imschoot and Federico Protto is part of the wider artistic research and production trajectory entitled “High as a Kite” produced by newpolyphonies. It was enabled through research with the support of Netwerk Aalst in Aalst Belgium, and kunstencentrum Buda in Kortrijk, Belgium. This research was made possible thanks to the support of Netwerk Aalst in Aalst, Belgium, and kunstencentrum Buda in Kortrijk, Belgium.
Myriam Van Imschoot is a Belgian performance and sound artist working with polyphony and available music from a radical openness to what surrounds us. She practices inclusive methods of co-creation with sound and voice. She founded newpolyphonies, a symbiotic structure for practice-based art that supports her work and that of the YouYou Group. Van Imschoot’s performances, films, and installations are shown all over Europe, for example in Centre Pompidou, Théâtre de Gennevilliers, MaerzMusik, deSingel, Hau, Kunstenfestivaldesarts, etc.
Federico Protto is a Uruguayan-Italian artist. His artistic practice unfolds across performance, sound, fashion, and research. Spanning a hybrid network of materialities, practices, and collaborators the artist aims at contributing to forms and tools for decolonial kinship. He graduated from the University of Applied Arts, Vienna in fashion design and post-graduated from a.apss – artistic research studies, in Brussels. His projects have been shown amongst others at nadaLokal, Vienna, International Feminist and Queer Festival Red Dawns, Ljubljana, MOMU fashion museum, Antwerp, and ModaLisboak.
